A SHEPPERTON vet is offering free dental checks for pets and giving discounts on all dentistry in September to mark National Pet Smile Month.
Jamie Crittall, owner of Beech House Veterinary Centre, which also has branches in Hersham and Thames Ditton, said: "It's a staggering fact that eight out of 10 dogs and cats over the age of three suffer from toothache and need professional veterinary dental treatment. We've made it one of our practice missions to reduce this statistic and help pets to have beautifully clean and shiny teeth.
"A trip to the veterinary dentist is much like a trip to a human one, with pets receiving the same level of care, except that our pets are often in pain and will not tolerate us working in their mouth without a general anaesthetic.
"Once anaesthetised, the mouth is examined and probed and any gingivitis, pockets or lesions are charted. Dental X-rays are taken of problematic teeth to help us assess the best treatment options, which is essential since 70 per cent of each tooth is below the gum-line and therefore cannot be seen otherwise.
"And, like us, dental care is not a one-off treatment, but something we need to consider throughout our pets' lives, with the emphasis on prevention rather than cure."
