Elmbridge Council and Xcel Leisure Centre encourage shoppers to get healthy
SHOPPERS at The Heart in Walton were urged to think of their own hearts, when Elmbridge Council and Xcel Leisure Centre joined forces on Saturday.
The council and the leisure centre manned a display at the shopping centre entrance to offer free blood pressure and body mass checks and raise awareness of local fitness activities.
Fiona Patterson, health development officer for the council, said: "All boroughs have problems with health - Elmbridge is one of the better ones but its important that people keep active.
"We've put flyers in Xcel and at recreation grounds but its scary the number of people who don't know what is available locally, and much of it free."
Council and Xcel staff, including an eagle mascot, encouraged passers-by to sign-up for the gym or activities including the Women's Running Network - in which groups of women meet once a week to run together.
Kids were invited to join ex-pro basketballer Cory McGee to try out basketball skills, and the sportsman is also conducting classes at primary schools thanks to an £8,500 grant from Sports England.
