Mongolian Olympic team gets Surrey tour

Mongolian Olympic delegates have been given a guided tour of Surrey’s sporting venues to persuade the nation to base their athletes in the county during the 2012 Olympics.

The two representatives were shown around Surrey’s sporting venues including a visit to the Guildford Spectrum, Surrey Sports Park and Woking Park Boxing Club.

Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games Denise Saliagopoulos said: “I'm sure they went away with good memories of Surrey and our excellent facilities.

“The county is an ideal place for Olympic teams to base their athletes and support staff during the 2012 Games and I will be delighted if the Mongolian National Olympic Committee chooses to stay here.”

Courtesy of the London Organising Committee each Olympic and Paralympic squad has a £25,000 grant to spend, and should the Mongolian’s choose Surrey as their base, the money would provide a cash injection to the area.

Mongolian delegates may have been particularly interested in the tour of the Woking Park Boxing Club, as their the nation achieved two medals at the 2008 games, including gold in the Bantamweight division.

Mongolia has a total of 19 Summer Olympics medals in its history, with their most successful haul of four medals coming two years ago at the Beijing Olympics.
