AN ATTEMPT to break the world record for largest simultaneous tai chi lesson took place on Sunday morning.

Starting at 11am, instructors from Sheppertonbased tai chi club Falling Leaf hosted the half-hour session at Thamesmead School sports centre, in Manygate Lane.

At the same time across the country, other instructors were also starting lessons in an attempt to break the current record, which stands at 33,996 people.

Organisers have submitted details to Guinness World Records and will find out if they've broken the record by September.

The event was to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Falling Leaf instructor Clive Hamblen said: "We don't know how we have done yet because they have to collate all the results and present them to Guinness World Records. It wasn't as big a turnout as we were hoping, but we did have 33 people turn up, which is good.

We raised more than£150 in cash on the day, and another £40 through the 'just giving' website. My wife works for the West Middlesex University Hospital, in the breast cancer unit, so we all had a vested interest in raising the money for the charity."
