Families get a grip on top trophies

IT WAS a families affair when youngsters from the Walton, Woodham and Sheerwater martial arts clubs outgunned rivals from all over the country in the Gladiator tournament, at Tolworth Sports Centre.

More than 500 competitors enjoyed kick boxing, gladiator events and combat contests.

Trophies were won by James, Lawrence and Charlie Ledda, who were followed on the podium by Connor,Rowan and Cavan Sullivan, and then Joshua and Christopher Bradwell plus Alex Jackson. Instructors Paul Sharke,Trevor Johnson and Steve Leach were all "very proud" of their students' success and are now preparing the competitors for the 2008 MAAS (Martial Art All Styles) Championships in November.

Combat Ju-Jitsu includes semi contact kick-boxing with take-downs, as in judo and hold-downs, as seen in wrestling - a style known as MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).

Experienced Woking instructor Brian Dossett says: "It's important that kids learn self discipline and have fun at the same time. However, it's important to ensure they are taught by qualified and recognised gladiator instructors, who are registered with the martial arts authorities."
