THERE was a double blow for Staines Bowls Club last weekend as both the men's and ladies' teams lost to Sunningdale.
In an annual set of fixtures over two legs, the men played for the Catley Challenge Cup and the ladies for the Simes Cup.
The ladies had a mountain to climb, having lost the first leg by 20 shots in May but they went down by just three shots, giving Sunningdale an overall 23-shot win.
Staines men were confident of overturning a narrow one-shot deficit from the first leg, and were 17 points up at the halfway stage.
But then the wheels came off, and Sunningdale stormed back to win by 15 shots. Staines' sole winning rink came courtesy of J Smith, M Griffiths, K Steele and N Whitman.
