Cards fold to late defeat

BLUE SQUARE PREMIER Torquay United...........................2 Woking........................................1

Woking conceded eight minutes from the end as they slipped to defeat at promotion-favourites Torquay last night.

Giuseppe Sole had given the Cards a first-half lead, but the Gulls hit back with two goals after the break to consign the visitors to their second-successive defeat.

Boss Kim Grant made two changes to the side that lost to Altrincham.

Joel Ledgister replaced Adekunle Salau in midfield, while Sole came in for Manny Williams, who was given compassionate leave after the birth of his child.

The visitors were the fastest out of the blocks, and almost took the lead through Liam Marum, but his shot came back off the post.

But they did break the deadlock 10 minutes before half time.

Chris Hargeaves brought down Marum 25 yards from goal, and Sole smashed the free-kick into the top left-hand corner.

But Torquay levelled on the hour. Former Cards keeper Michael Poke punted the ball upfield, and Elliot Benyon fired past Ross Worner from 12 yards.

And the hosts grabbed their winner in the 82nd minute.

Benyon fed Wayne Carlisle down the right, and he lashed the ball beyond Worner into the corner to break Woking's hearts.
